Merry Coolmas ♥

Hello my lovelies, Happy Xmas Eve to you wherever you may be + whatever you might be up to this evening.

If you celebrate Christmas then i'm sure you'll be spending Christmas Eve doing something festive or just relaxing with family and/or friends.

As has become tradition in recent years, I decided to have a go at a festive themed illustration. I only just finished it today, hence the Xmas Eve blog post. It's not as overtly Christmassy as some of my past designs, but here it is anyway...
She's a bit of a cool chick, hence the blog title. I drew the hair aaaaages ago, but I couldn't think of anything to go with it so I figured a christmas jumper + kilt style skirt might work. + the pattern in the background was 100% made just for this piece. I tried plain snowflakes but it didn't look right so I made more work for myself and came up with this simple little pattern instead.

There's a surprising amount of detail in this one, the Jumper has a woven fabric texture and the stripes on the skirt took quite a while to do. The hair always takes forever to edit as well, believe it or not but it's the most time consuming part of any Candy Doll illustration.

She's got a little bit of attitude to go with her ironic festive jumper + green ombre tipped ends, she's too 'cool' for Christmas. I don't know maybe she's just not that into the holiday season or something. You'd have to ask her yourself.

If she's not really feeling it this year, then she's not the only one.

This year I've been really struggling to get into the Christmas spirit. I'm not sure why as i'm usually the kind of person who starts playing Christmas music and wearing festive jumpers non-stop from December 1st onwards. But this year it just never happened, I kept waiting for the Christmas buzz to hit, but it never did. This isn't the first time this has happened, a few years ago I was going through a rough patch and I barely celebrated at all. I refused to put up any decorations or wrap any gifts. It wasn't a great time but I thought I was past all that now.

Apparently not. This year there's been no excitement for Christmas; for Star Wars, yes, i've been excited like you would not believe, but for Christmas... no such luck.

Before you start having a go at me about being ungrateful etc, i'll just stop you there because no, that's not at all what I mean.

I just think there's a lot of pressure at Christmas time to be terribly cheery and happy and FESTIVE! It's a time when you're supposed to be merry and bright, spending days with those closest to you and doing all the typical christmassy things. In the UK that usually involves copious amounts of alcohol, chocolate and cheesy television. But my family isn't really like that, i'm not sure if it's because both myself and my dad have Aspergers but we've just never been the sort of family that sits around watching TV together for hours on end. In fact we don't spend much time together at all, but that's fine, that's just how we are.

Take today for example. I've spent the entire day in my room drawing and editing + reading and listening to the 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' score on repeat. The only times i've left my room were to get a cup of tea and walk up to check the post. My dad spent the morning in the garden before spending the afternoon watching TV by himself. And my mum... well i'm not really sure but it probably involved coffee and facebook. But like I said, that's just us, regardless of the time of year.

I don't usually feel any pressure to get my family in one room and spend time together, I love my parents more than anything but at Christmas time I feel like there's something wrong with me for not wanting to do what 'normal' families do during the holidays.

the christmas tree in town
Usually I don't give any of this a second thought as it's so normal, but at Christmas it seems to become all the more apparent and I know it shouldn't bother me in the slightest, but it DOES, so I get all conflicted, should I make more of an effort or not? Most years it's the former, I go all out, christmas music blaring from my room, decorations everywhere, trips out to fairs, family shopping excursions and the like. This year it's the latter I think.

I'm just not feeling it for some reason. It may as well be any other day of the year. Don't get me wrong, I might not be running around singing carols and throwing glitter, but I still LOVE getting presents for people, choosing gifts and wrapping them up. But this year i've been struggling finacially and it's gotten me kind of down because I can't afford to buy my friends and family the sorts of gifts I want to. It's silly I know, and gifts aren't the be all and end all of the festive season but still.

It's a daft thing to get low about but my mum arranged all of our xmas gifts earlier and it upset me to see the tiny pile of gifts they each have from me. All I can think is that next year I have to get a job so that I can give them a better Christmas.

she'll read this and come and tell me to stop being a daft sod, but I can't help but feel guilty. My family all do so much for me, it upsets me that I can't treat them to heaps of lovely things.

and on that note I have NO idea what my original point was. I went off on a tangent there somewhere, so it's probably best if I call it a day.

thanks for reading, I'll try and get another post in before 2016 starts, it will probably be Star Wars themed, so i'm just warning you now...

Merry Christmas to YOU

more BPL shoes ♥

So i've been busy today with College stuff but when I got home I got a nice message off Leah (of BPL fame and fabulousness) on twitter telling me about what a super success BPL day was on the 20th October

so in light of this...

here's another post dedicated to the gorgeous genius that is... Black Patent Leather High Heels!

Here's a shot Leah sent me of the super duper BPL shoes she rocked for BPL day

totally amazingly and unbelievably gorgeous shoes!

So... to join in (and since she asked to see my shoes too) here's a little shot of my BPL collection...

it's obviously not anywhere near as impressive as Leah's, seeing as i only have 2 pairs of BPL shoes... but I luuuurve them both nonetheless

and here are a few more shots that Leah emailed me, of people all around the world that took part in this years BPL day...

some great shots right! she sent me 32 shots in all so i picked out my faves and posted them on here for your personal enjoyment...

sadly i never got any photos sent to me from any of YOU... but

hopefully next year YOU can be a part of this too!

anyway, big thanks to Leah for the photos and don't forget, if you want to find out more about BPL Day and BPL shoes in general, check out the facebook group here and become a member - THE NEW BPL SHOE GROUP

anyway in other news... i broke up for half term today which means NO college for a week! yaaaaay, good times!

so today i started a new little digital painting on photoshop just to try and get to grips with using the tools and having a go at various effects. it's JUST a test!

so using this extreeeeeeemely rough sketch

which is originally based on this super cute little image by 'zerosshadow' which i spotted whilst browsing on deviantART. see the original here on his super deviantART page - zerosshadow

however... if that watermark on the picture is anything to go by i have reason to believe this piece is actually by this person, but i can't find it on her site - Artwork by Gabrielle

anyway... this is what i've done so far...

now like i said... it's just a test so it's supposed to be all messy and rough, i'm still learning this stuff so... bear with me! oh i don't have a 'tablet' either (sadly) so this is taking me forever to work on!

this is just a sort of 'under coat' as well (to use a painting term... indeed) so that's why there's hardly any shading or tone of any kind... it WILL be added at some point!

so hopefully i'll get her finished soon though there's no rush really since i have a WHOLE WEEK OFF COLLEGE!!!!

not sure if i mentioned that... i'm a little bit excited about it! not sure if you can tell!

* * *

errrrgh! i feel sick with nerves and freaking out-ness (not gayness... whatever Mike thinks, that is NOT what i'm sick with! he clearly is... but i am not)

i just had to re-release our broadband since i accidentally used up all the 'allowance' for this month...

oh dear

bad skype... it's all your fault i swear!

anyway... that's £12 i'm never going to see again!

ergh! £12 for a week of internet... i am a complete and utter... idiot

i PROMISE it won't happen again (cross my heart!)

and on that note i'll say adieu

that's all folks...

10/10/10 ♥

so apparently it's a pretty special day today?!

10th of the 10th of 2010

yeah yeah yeah... so it's unusual and all that but to be honest the day hasn't been any more amazing than any other normal sunday!

i've spent the day in my pj's editing photos and working on logo commissions, chatting on skype and watching a bit of 'Mad Men'

all in all it's been a nice day

so... relatively short post tonight (well it IS a Sunday after all...)

i guess this post will act as the first official grand unveilling of my Creepalicious slightly Halloween inspired Pin-up Girl illustration!

so about a week and a half ago i made a few photo-copies of some of my old Pin-up Girls, i messed around with some acrylic and a bit of watercolour before settling on some good old fashioned coloured pencil crayons

so aaaages ago using THIS photo of the gorgeous Amanday Seyfried from the Vanity Fair 'vanities' Pin-up series...

i drew THIS illustration...
and using a grayscale photocopy of THIS girl... i ended up colouring it like THIS...
she's supposed to be coloured in the style of Angelique Houtkamp (more info in THIS post -

Patterns and Pinafores ♥) but it wasn't easy since the image i was working on was an A3 photo copy AND i have rubbish pencil crayons, however i did my best and with a little bit (aka A HELL OF A LOT) of photoshop editing i ended up with this...

so yeah... you can see why she's a Halloween inspired Pin-up i think! i did my best though, i definitely wanted her to be a tattooed pin-up. initially she was supposed to be a sort of witchy pin-up (what with the wicked witch of the West green for the bikini) but i hadn't planned on how i was going to do the tattoos.

to begin with i downloaded some basic tattoo photoshop brushes but they were a bit naff so i had a better idea...

i scoured Angelique's website (Salon Serpent) and using screencaps from her prints and paintings i painstakingly turned 30 of her tattoo designs into tattoo brushes for this illustration.

you see... i TOLD you it was taking me a while! now you know why!

i guess since so much has been done to the original scan you could call this a sort of digital painting but either way, i'm happy with how she's turned out.

it took FOREVER to edit... but it's done now!

***
that's it really, i've been so busy tonight working on logo re-designs i forgot to make anything to eat!

so... off to microwave some popcorn and flick through the latest issues of Vogue and Elle and maybe pop on a DVD, i'm thinking Hot Fuzz since i have pretty much spent the last hour and a half quoting it with Mike on skype!

so i guess

that's all folks...

arrivederci mia amicos e amicas

EDIT: oh i almoooost forgot about the whole '300th facebook fan' shout out malarkey!!!

ok so after much deliberation and checking of the fan page (HERE - Jade Boylan Illustration) it seems that the 300th fan was... Judith Vernon

now this is extra coolio and merveilleux because it JUST so turns out... that Judith is one of my old teachers from Primary school!

she was my form tutor when i was 5-6 so will forever be 'Mrs Vernon' to me!

anyway, a big THANK YOU to her for being my 300th fan on facebook and thank you to everyone else who has 'liked' the page since as well

thank yoooouuuu ◕‿◕ xX
