Paper People

Hello chums! Back again. As per usual I can't think of anything terribly clever or witty to start off today's post with, so i'm just going prattle on for a few lines then crack on with posting some photos instead.

So I haven't done much art lately. That sounds like the best way to sum up my total lack of creativity since the tail end of last year. I barely draw, I barely edit stuff on my macbook, other than the occasional bit of graphic design, I don't really do anything remotely creative.

But over the past few weeks i've been trying to shuffle-clamber out of my creativity-less malaise so i've been working on something new. It's been a bit of an agonisingly slow process but bit by minsucle bit the designs have begun to grow and develop into something actually printable.

So I thought, why don't I actually get some printed?!

And well, I did, and this is the result.

So without any further ado please allow me to introduce you to my newest creations, Aalish and Illiam...

In case you haven't figured it out yet, Aalish and Illiam are 'paper dolls' or to be more neutral 'paper people' (since Illiam has nothing against playing with dolls, he just isn't sure that he wants to be one. Aalish doesn't really mind either way, as long as there's chocolate cake available afterwards. There is cake isn't there?).

Those of you that have kept up with my work for a while might remember the Pinup Paper Doll I designed 2 years ago for local craft heaven and haberdashery treasure trove Sweet Ginger Emporium.

Well in many ways Aalish and Illiam are a small continuation of where 'Sweet Ginger' left off (who knows, maybe they're her children?!) and unsurprisingly they've been designed and created with the Sweet Ginger shop in mind.

They're a nice size for little hands, each 'doll' (sorry Illiam!) comes printed on a neat A4 sheet with a teeny tiny little matching button badge with their face on!

And they already have lots of nice clothes to choose from + some fun dressing up costumes! At the moment there are 2 sheets available for each doll (but I have so many more outfit sheets planned and in development!)

First up there's a Dressing Up sheet for Aalish + a Fancy Dress sheet for Illiam

And also a more casual Summer sheet for Aalish and a general Everyday sheet for Illiam, with LOTS of nice outfits to pick from each sheet.

I've wanted to design a paper doll aimed at both girls and boys, and although all of Aalish's clothes might be a tad too girly for Illiam (he doesn't much like it when I make him try on a dress, but Aalish thinks it's hilarious) ALL of Illiam's clothes will fit Aalish perfectly, they're completely swappable, so that she can have a go at being an astronaut or a dinosaur as well, should she want to (which she definitely does) but sometimes Aalish just borrows some of Illiam's normal clothes.

That's why there's a Pirate costume on each dress-up sheet. Most of Aalish's costumes are on the girly side, (because who wouldn't want to dress up as a mermaid or a princess?!) but that certainly doesn't mean that she doesn't like to dress up as a swashbuckling Pirate captain and run around with a sword every once in a while. Or all the time. Sometimes they both dress up as Pirates and go off in search of buried treasure! But so far all they've succeeded in doing is making a mess of my desk...

Sometimes when Illiam puts on the Dino costume, he pretends he's a fire-breathing dragon instead, but Aalish doesn't mind, she just acts like a fearsome Princess ready to defend her kingdom from any and all perils!

Other times they just put on their Superhero costumes and fly off to save the world, you know, just a typical day really. But they're always home in time for tea, especially if there are fizzy sweets for pudding (those are Illiam's favourites!)

Ahem. You can probably tell that I had a LOT of fun designing the clothes and costumes! Aalish's were kind of a doddle but Illiam's were particularly challenging since I never ever really seem to draw anything for boys, so coming up with nifty little outfits for him was tonnes of fun.

Probably one of the most fun parts of the entire process was coming up with all the colours and fiddly little details for each outfit, like the pirate medallion on Illiam's costume + the treasure map. I got a bit carried away sometimes but it was worth it when I opened the box of prints and saw how fun they looked!

Although they're maybe a bit fiddly for very little hands to snip out (looks like mummy and daddy are the lucky ones to get to wield the scissors) once they've been freed from their paper confines, Aalish and Illiam are a perfect treat for little kids and big kids alike. (I for one am most definitely a big kid and i've had heaps of fun dressing them up on my desk!)

And at the end of the day they can peg up their lovely clothes and pick something new to wear on their next big adventure!

So there you have it, Aalish and Illiam, two brilliant little people, i've no doubt that you'll be seeing an awful lot of them in the future (keep an eye out around Halloween and Christmas in particular!) since they're definitely the coolest kids around!

Hopefully the Doll and Clothing sheets will soon be available from Sweet Ginger in Ramsey here in the Isle of Man. I don't have any immediate plans to try and sell the sheets via my Etsy shop (although it's full of lots of other nice things you CAN buy) but if anyone was particularly interested in getting their hands on a set I could probably be persuaded.

And on that note i'll draw this post to a close. I'll no doubt be back at some point next week to tell you about the other little creative things i've been working on (spoiler alert: I may or may not have attempted a small painting) and whatever else, if anything, happens between now and then.

So it's goodbye from me, and goodbye from Aalish and Illiam!

Until next time, cheerio folks!

Cards and Stickers ★

well it's been an eventful few days! if you follow me on facebook/twitter then you will already know that i've been stuck in Lancaster, UK for the past 2 days due to ferry cancellations!!! :(

basically, i was supposed to catch the boat home on Tuesday afternoon but due to motorway closures, i missed it by 10 minutes...

and unfortunately, all of the boats were cancelled the next day due to bad weather conditions!

but i'm FINALLY home now, and that's what matters :)

this morning i popped to the IOM post depot in Ramsey to collect lots of lovely parcels

containing... funky new Greetings Cards AND Sugar Skull stickers!!!!!

yaaaay get excited!

the cards are lovely quality, i'm really pleased with the silky finish + i think they look rather cute packaged up with envelopes in their little cello bags

there are currently 5 designs to choose from...

the Sugar Skull

Matryoshka

Candy Girl

Macarons

and a new scrabble design for Birthdays

+ they ALL have my logo on the back as well

and as for the stickers...

well i just want to stick them everywhere! but they're not really for me, they're for all of you...

anyway, ALL cards and stickers are now available to buy via my esty shop

and for a limited time only, ALL greetings cards ordered will come with a free Sugar Skull circle sticker as well!!!

i'm still attempting to procure some cards for Xmas, i'm trying to find somewhere to get them printed, so i'll keep you all posted on those!

but in the meantime, head on over to my etsy shop and have a skeet at what IS available - Jade's Etsy Shop

in other news, another lovely envelope also arrived for me today containing a very pretty print featuring the work of the lovely Madi Barrett aka Madiillustrates

you may remember that i ran a Creative Café feature on her gorgeous work a few months ago, and if you don't remember, well then you can check it out here - Creative Café #7

anyway, i've had my eye on the print for a while so i decided to treat myself!

and since i was Madi's 20th customer she also sent me this beautiful little pocket mirror!

love, love, love it!

now i just need to find a space on my 'wall of stuff' to put up the lovely print!

* * *

i've a few more posts to run over the weekend to try and make up for the days lost in Lancaster! so be sure to look out for those

i have to go into college tomorrow, on a Saturday!!! shock horror, but i really need to get stuff printed ahead of my assessment, which had to be rescheduled because i missed it... thanks to the boat being cancelled!

Candy Colours ♥

so despite the fact that i haven't left the house in days + the fact that i haven't blogged in aaaages tonight i thought, what the hell! let's have a blog post, why not . . .

wanted to share my latest candy coloured illustration with you all

the aptly named 'C A N D Y'

yes she's a little bright

and yes, for those who've followed this blog for a while, that is the modern Alice in Wonderland Girl i drew when i was bored one afternoon

but as you can see this one is a little more crazy in the colour department

moving on from the garish colours, check out what i FINALLY finished making this afternoon!

i swear my hands have been deliberately naughty today, it took 3 attempts for me to stitch the head together since i kept sewing parts up wrong

anyway it's done now

ahem . . . check out the tag

well actually truth be told, this lovely little fawn isn't 100% finished yet but i need to buy the finishing touch tomorrow so it soon will be!

what else?!

well i also finaaaally glued on some anywhere clips this afternoon,

then i went a bit loco trying them all on (ignoring the VILE quality of the photos!!!)

this is my fave though (even if i say so myself! and i do)

i will be making some of these rosette clips available in the etsy shop soon but i think i'm going to have to keep one of the nautical ones for myself!

* * *

nothing else to report (i think) tomorrow it's off to college to get some sewing done + finish off my critical study essay + print out a bajillion candy prints

bye bye dear readers!

that's all folks ◕‿◕ ★ xX

♥ I don't do Housework...

so i know i promised to do a blog post yesterday all about my new painting and all... but i spent yesterday afternoon in town doing a bit of xmas shopping in the freezing conditions and then i went to the cinema, with my friend Charlotte and her husband Rob, to see the new Harry Potter film.

i have one word to say about that movie... AWESOME!!!

anyway, since i failed on the posting times yesterday, i thought i'd tell you all about the little painting today instead!

so...

you may recall, quite a while ago while i was researching old 40's, 50's and 60's American Advertisements at college, i spotted a cute little lady and decided to have a go at drawing her

you can read the original post right here - Acrylics and Apples ♥

but the point is, a few days ago i decided to have a go at using the lovely set of gouache paints my older sister Simone gave me during my trip to Coventry last week

so using the original drawing i did, i worked on a digital version, playing around with colours trying to find a nice mix to paint on the canvas. this is the digital version of what i wanted the painting to look like...

so using the page scan that sort of looks like this (see the above post link for the proper one)

i drew out a simple fine lined version of it, i enlarged a copy of it up to A3 size and got to work on my little canvas...

here you can see the copy i was working from and yes... my desk does have 3 Daleks on it + a stack of Torchwood and Doctor Who books!

don't act all surprised i DID tell you that i just so happen to be a massive Sci-fi nerd!

you can't really see it in this shot but i'd already sketched out the outline on the canvas so all i had to do was fill it in with my trusty sharpie pen

after that was all finished i started the fun part... blocking in the colours!

the gouache was wonderful to work with, i'm so impatient when it comes to painting so oils drive me mad and most of the time the acrylics i use aren't pigmented enough. i love watercolours but i'm a bit rubbish at using them unfortunately! these worked out great though

i started out with quite a pale blue for the dress, but colour is so much fun so i got a bit carried away with the layers

the sharpie outline was handy as well since i normally ruin most of my attempts at painting by painting over my pencil lines so much i can't tell what's supposed to go where!

next i had to work out some way of painting in the mouth. i didn't want to leave it black since my digital version of this had bright red lips and nails.

i tried painting over the sharpie with red gouache and acrylic but the paints weren't having any of it!

so i blocked the mouth out entirely in white and grabbed something a little stronger...

believe it or not but that's actually a nail art pen full of bright red nail varnish!

i bought a massive set of those pens at the 'Clothes Show Live' in Birmingham a few years ago and they've never really come in handy until now! her nails and her earring were all coloured using the nail art pens as well. i'm glad i finally found something to use them on!

so that's that! the painting is done now, i added a little message on the piece of paper in her hand as well...

i'm not sure if you can read it or not but it says 'i don't do Housework...'

i know the original version said 'Merry Christmas' but i didn't want my painting to be seasonal

so that's it, painting times... DONE!

NOTE: i am aware that my version of this housewife does look slightly demented... but i think that just ads to her crazily messed up charm! ♥

* * *

in other news, it's still freeeeezing here! snow and ice everywhere!

i took this snap on the day i started the painting, i was sitting at my desk minding my own business when it started snowing and snowing and snowing...

ah that photo kind of sucks i guess, and apologies for all the clutter!

i had another go, this was the view outside the window

the lovely Winter Wonderland outside my bedroom! love it...

it is sooooo cold though!

* * *

back to college tomorrow (weather permitting) i'm supposed to have my assessment this week so i am panicking just a little bit (aka A LOT!!!!!) so we'll see how that goes!

i had to go to the airport this morning to have my photo taken with the Little Lego Christmas Tree again so i managed to grab a copy of the paper as well, i'll scan it in tomorrow though since i can't find the scanner cable...

FAIL on my part!

sorry!

that's all folks...
