Troll Magic ♥

hello darlings, I'm here to tell you about a very exciting project I worked on recently.

In October - November 2015 I collaborated with Pin Club: a UK based monthly subscription service offering limited edition enamel pins, featuring original artwork by various artists and illustrators.

I exclusively designed a super-dee-duper rainbow haired troll pin for the November subscription, limited to 200 pins and sold to customers all over the world.

and HERE IT IS!!!

Isn't it utterly glorious! This is the first time I've ever designed an enamel pin so I had NO idea how the illustration might work out, but they pins turned out perfect! Seriously the detail is amazing, and the colours are so bright.

The troll pin was the largest one produced by Pin Club to date, measuring 39mm and using 10 individual colours, manufactured using soft enamel and black nickel on an iron base including a rubber clutch back.

I'm also happy to say that almost 90% of the pins were sold out within the first week of availability! Usually each month there are 100 pins available but there were 200 of my design and people LOVED it! It's been so much fun seeing people post photos of their new pins on Instagram and leaving lovely comments about how much they like the cute troll design.

Look, I even made a funky troll pattern using the illustration I drew! I'm so pleased I took the time to message Pin Club and talk about the possibility of a collaboration after spotting their profile on Instagram. They were super enthusiastic about my work and after giving me a week to come up with something I ended up drawing the troll overnight, I was so excited at the thought of seeing one of my illustrations as an actual enamel pin people could wear!

The enamel pin game is something I've wanted to get into for a while, but pins aren't cheap to manufacture and there's always a risk that your design might not turn out the way you'd hoped. This was a great opportunity to get paid for a design while not having to worry about manufacturing or packaging costs. It was sort of like my print-on-demand deals with Society6 and RedBubble, I supply the artwork while they manufacture and ship the goods.

To be honest I think I was most excited about getting my free pins in the post! I was sent 5 of the troll pins including one ultra special and rare one with a tiny red gem on its tummy! These were limited to three pieces only so I feel super honoured to have one, plus red is my favourite colour so it was a double win!

Unfortunately for all of you lovely people, the troll pins have now SOLD OUT completely! But don't despair just yet because I'm giving one away in my Instagram Giveaway!

along with a heap of other neat stuff of course. But if you want to get your hands on this pin then you're going to have to follow me on Instagram + follow the rules of the giveaway to be in with a chance of winning!

the Giveaway closes TOMORROW NIGHT at midnight so you'd better get a move on!

Oh and if enamel pins aren't really your thing but you still want to express your love for trolls another way then behold... the sparkliest, cutest and most magical teeny tiny troll necklaces!

That's right, i'm not just drawing trolls, i'm also turning them into necklaces and brooches! These tiny trolls come strung on silver plated curb chain, ready to complement your outfit in the kitschiest of ways!

But I also have slightly larger brooches and necklaces in another trio of tantalising colours.

Why trolls you may ask?

Trolls were a big part of my childhood, I remember having dozens of them in all shapes and sizes littered about my room in little clusters of fluffy haired cuteness. I used to love brushing out their hair and dressing them up in cute outfits, then I would line them all up in a rainbow display. They're all in a box in the attic and i'd love to get some down to add to the collection of stuff (aka junk) on my desk, but I can't bring myself to go back up into the attic after I nearly fell from it last time (that's a story for another day I think!).

It's hard not to like these kitschy little trolls though isn't it, they have a kind of gormless look to them, it's very sweet and they're so friendly, then there's the magical fluffy hair! My point is that there's nothing terrifying about pudgy plastic trolls. At primary school a friend brought me a traditional Norwegian wooden troll back from her trip to Oslo and it was so sinister looking that it's been shoved away in a cupboard ever since!

My first shoplifting experience involved a troll. Now before you start calling the police I'd like to point out that I was only about fifteen-months-old at the time and safely strapped into my buggy. However this did not stop me from grabbing a pink haired troll in a white polka-dot dress off a shelf in a shop and quietly holding onto it for the rest of the day. By the time my mum eventually realised what i'd done, i'd been happily chewing on one of the trolls' feet and had slobbered all over the dress, so suffice it to say, we did not return the troll. The weirdest part of the whole thing was that the troll spoke Danish when you pressed it's tummy.

So yeah, I suppose you could say that I like trolls. So i'm super glad I got the opportunity to design a cute rainbow haired one to be made into neat little pins.

And i'll shut up about it now and say goodbye!

do come back again soon...

Candy Hearts ♥

hello chums, as promised i'm back again with yet another thrilling installment of Jade's Life, this week featuring a new Candy Doll illustration + some other stuff.

so let's get on with it.

As you may have noticed, I spend a lot of my time drawing ladies with colourful hair and nice clothes, I'm not always sure why I draw things like this but I enjoy creating them so that's what matters right?!

Anyway there's a new one further on in this post...

but before that, here's some anti-Valentine Candy Hearts I did for V day last week.

I usually try to create some sort of illustration for Valentine's Day but this year I left it too late and I didn't have time to put together a new Candy Doll (like the one below) so I opted for Girl Power candy hearts instead!
http://society6.com/product/be-mine-valentine-hd6_print#1=45
In case you're wondering, I spent my Valentine's Day wandering round town with my little cousin Sienna and then in the evening I went for tea with my friend Lorna before going to see 50 Shades of Grey with her at the cinema for our Valentine's 'Date'. In my defense, I would like to point out that I only agreed to go see that film with Lorna on the understanding that she'll go and see Crimson Peak with me in October! ^_^

Lorna is a MASSIVE fan of Jamie Dornan, so I didn't get much say in the matter when she booked tickets to go see the film. I didn't mind too much, it was nice to spend a V Day out doing stuff instead of sitting at home watching horror films by myself + consuming my body weight in butter popcorn.

ps: here's the Birthday card I made for Lorna last month! (see, i'm SUCH a good friend! I mean this card was obviously soooo tedious and boring to put together...)

right i'm getting distracted, back to the post, back to the ART!

I also made the design available on a bunch of products over on Society6 (I think the clock is my fave!)

Right then, onto the other thing i've drawn recently, say hello to this gal!

I braid/plait my hair pretty much every single day so it's always fun to draw a Candy Doll with a nice plait, gotta love that chunky rainbow braid right!

she's not got any (visible) tattoos but she's a certified member of the Candy Doll Club (see her rosette!) and she gets her jeans and necklaces from ASOS

she's also available on various cool stuff via Society6

* * *

in other news, this week I sent off a super cute Sailor Moon tote bag to a lovely lady in Alaska! I'm sooooo happy to have finally sold this bag! I really enjoyed working on the design and when I added it to my shop it got a lot of likes and faves from people but nobody bought it! So i'm glad to know that someone out there liked it enough to give it a home.
after i'd sent the bag off I took the opportunity to update my Etsy Shop with some more tote designs,
there's currently only one of each bag in stock so if you've had your eye on one, be aware that it might not be around forever!

ALL available bags are listed HERE + each bag comes with a matching Candy Doll Club ribbon rosette! AND a bundle of free postcards and stickers, it's really super good value for £8

right and now I can't think of much else to tell you so i'll end the post. I think i've done enough self promotion for one blog!

until next time, thanks for stopping by to read (or look at the pictures) hope to see you again next time!

May Drawing Challenge - Day 10

today's theme was 'an Ampersand'. now i won't lie, i'd been looking forward to this theme purely for the chance to doodle one of my favourite typographical characters.

i'm a bit of a self confessed type geek so i apologise in advance if you really don't give a hoot about type and fonts in general. you should really care though!!! if more people cared we wouldn't be surrounded by ridiculously overused (not to mention wrongly used!) fonts like Comic Sans, Curlz, Lucida Handwriting and... Papyrus (shudder)

anyway i digress, here's my Ampersand...

it's a messy rainbow version of a Caslon Ampersand (my personal favourite) created by British type designer William Caslon in the 1720's

so why this one and not another i hear you cry, well it's quite simple. i adore this kind of Ampersand purely for it's decorative loops and swirls

+ the fact that unlike most modern '&'s this one looks like the word it was originally scribbled to replace (credited to a shorthand writing method proposed in 63BC)

you see, the ampersand is actually two letters combined. The E and T of the Latin 'et' literally meaning 'and', hence it's lasting use as a somewhat flourished abbreviation for that little joining word.

if you look at the lovely Caslon ampersand you can easily make out the E and the T.

And that's why i like it + believe it or not, it's much easier to draw than one like this &.

end of typographical rambling.

so until tomorrow, that's all folks... xX

May Drawing Challenge - Day 9

today's theme was 'a stickgirl with an umbrella'. i wanted to use lots of colours today so here's what i doodled...

i think i've always wanted a rainbow umbrella, then again i already have one covered in roses, one with frills and polka dots + one with a lego pattern! maybe i don't need any more! :)

until tomorrow, that's all folks... xX

Coventry Times ★

phew! it's been a busy few days, trying to get everything sorted for going away + finishing off some commissions and stuff

i haven't slept properly since yesterday morning when i woke up... i always seem to stay awake 24hrs when i'm about to catch a boat anywhere... so i'm a little highly strung at the moment, to say the least

anyway, we (myself + my dear mama) finally made it to Coventry late this afternoon, it's been miserable weather lately but there was a colourful welcome waiting for us as we reached our destination

the picture really doesn't do it justice, it was such an incredible rainbow! a double one, and the arcs reached right back into 2 full rainbows, brilliant stuff!

i also have 2 new drawing things to share with you

i got bored in the small hours of this morning while a big thunder/lightning storm raged outside and so i drew some little Kokeshi dolls...

i also wanted to do something with my Matryoshka dolls but i'm not too sure of the result...

i think i prefer them by themselves!

other than that there's also the first in a series of 'possible' xmas card designs

i started the drawings for them all back in August just after i got back from my trip to Ireland, but despite listening to my 'Christmas Music' playlist on repeat all day, i just couldn't really get into the festive spirit so i abandoned them!

i'm attempting to take them up again now but i may end up leaving it, not sure yet!

* * *

oh oh AND when i arrived in Coventry i found an email waiting for me directing me to a nice little feature of my work from 'The Young Creatives'

Meet 20-year-old freelancerJADE BOYLAN.
When she’s not illsustrating/blogging/writing/designing, Jade can be found reading/baking/collecting/watching Formula 1. ‘I kind of suck at proper hobbies,’ she says although we could not disagree more.
Jade spends most of her money buying books. ‘When I’m not buying or reading books, I’ll probably be drawing, watching movies, or writing books of my own! Books, books, books!’
Oh, and one last thing: she just can’t STAND celery...

these are just the images from it, the actual interview bit was v fun to do, you can see the full feature + read it all here - TYC

* * *

right and i think that's it for now, tonight i plan to sit in my hotel room and sleep... lots!

tomorrow i think i'm off to see my big sister + my nieces and nephew so that should be suuuuper!

so until next time, that's all folks... ◕‿◕ ★ xX

plushies and stuff ★

so over the past few days i've been jumping back and forth between commissions and college work, so far it's not been going too much to plan since i keep going back to my commissions! (well... college doesn't pay me to draw does it!!!)

anyway, i've also been extra EXTRA distracted by some stuff that arrived in the post.

i've decided that when i make and sell my little handmade plushie necklace charms, i want to send them off to their new owners in as sweet a way as possible so i've invested in some little sparkly gift pouches + funky tags featuring my illustrations

and voila! these are the ones i had a go at today at college, (we had a great lecture from Juan Moore this afternoon but i did these in the break)

i chose purple for the bags since it's girly and bright + most of what i make is pink so pink bags might have been overkill! and as for the tags... well they're just a candy coloured rainbow of fun!

+ i think they work quite well with the little bags, the organza pouches are sheer enough for you to see the colours of the cupcake charms so the tags help spread the colourfulness!

* * *

lately i've been having a go at a little bit of sewing. however it seems that i really need to practice getting back into it because i can't seem to make anything properly anymore!

here are my 3 latest creations...

and for some inexplicable reason, in the small hours of Tuesday morning i made these 3 little palm sized creatures....

there's a bunny, a cat and a dog... although whether they actually look like the animals they're supposed to be is debatable...

they kind of suck... i'm still not very good on the sewing machine! for some reason i can only make stuff neatly when i stitch it all by hand!

* * *

i promised i'd share a picture of my college work space so here you go

this is how my desk board is looking so far this year...

a bit different from last years pinup fest but colourful nonetheless!

there's some local inspiration up there as well though, with postcards and business cards featuring the work of Manx artists Adam Berry, Karen Tomlinson and Juan Moore + stuff from some of my fave British illustrators, Lauren Child, John Tenniel and Sarah McIntyre.

* * *

not much else to report on for now my lovelies, but i have a funky new creative café feature to run at some point over the weekend so look out for that!

and until then, i guess that's all folks... ◕‿◕ ★ xX

PS - have you spotted the new 'grab code' banners yet??? there's 2 to pick from at the moment and they're in the sidebar up near the top underneath my 'about me' section, so feel free to pick one and add it to your blog reel or sidebar :D

Lusciously Lovely Lipsticks ♥

so today it's been another gloriously sunny day here in the Isle of Man

i've had a killer headache all day so decided to get some fresh air and wander up to the postbox to check the mail

my postbox is a good five minute walk up a hill so it gave me chance to sample the lovely Spring day even if i was ill (and still wearing my pj's)

good job i checked the post because . . .

my new lipsticks had arrived!!!

i was sent two absolutely gorgeous shades of red lipstick from 'Rockalily' (if you recall, i designed the lipstick logo below for Rockalily recently)

now Rockalily is run by the fabulous and totally gorgeous ReeRee Rockette who i've been a fan of for a while now, her blog is brilliant and she always dresses wonderfully, very 50's rockabilly + she has some seriously awesome ink (i may be scared of needles but i'm still a fan of tattoos)

she is utterly fabulous in every way since not only does she run her own cosmetics brand and blog about her awesome rockabilly themed life, she also runs a quirky networking group for other women running their own businesses

anyway, since i network with her via twitter (@ReeReeRockette) i've become aware of the cosmetics brand 'Rockalily' she's been launching

well it finally launched yesterday morning so i knew i just HAD to get my hands on some of those lipsticks!

so far she's launched 4 fabulous shades of Rockalily lipstick, each is specifically designed to suit particular skin tones and most excitingly of all, 2 of them are designed especially to suit pale skin

there's . . .

Rockette Red: creamy and luxurious matte lipstick. classic bright red perfect for paler skin tones. also a blue based lipstick (better for making your teeth look whiter)

Roulette Red: a deeper shade of classic red. also perfect for paler skin tones, with a more sultry look. also blue based.

Hot Rod Red: an orange based red more suitable for darker skin tones, classic bright red.

Pompadour Pink: a gorgeous semi-gloss lipstick in bright fuchsia. also blue based, 'the perfect pink'

as you can see, they're ALL gorgeous! but i plumped for 'Rockette Red' and 'Roulette Red' since i am after all quite a pale person (in case you hadn't noticed) and because they looked so super duper sublime!

+ i found it hard not to automatically love a make-up brand that has this as it's tag line . . .

"Rockalily Lipsticks - Because life is too short not to wear lipstick"

now i've been wearing red lipstick for years but it hasn't been easy since 9 times out of 10, a lipstick that i try/buy just ends up looking pink when i wear it since the blue or orange tones in it are all wrong for my skin tone (despite what the cosmetics shop assistants say . . .)

i have several tubes still stacked up on my dressing table (+ 2 more secreted away in my handbag) so the search for 'the perfect red lipstick' is a search i've been on for quite a while now!

even top brands like Chanel, Dior, MAC and Tom Ford have failed to serve up an appropriate 'red' for me, more's the pity really because i've lost and given away dozens of lipsticks over the years simply because they failed to do their job . . . until i got hold of a Rockalily lipstick that is!!!

after moping about watching movies i thought i'd cheer myself up by testing out the lippy so this afternoon i tried on 'Roulette Red' the slightly darker, 'sultrier' shade out of the two and as soon as i'd swiped it on i was just beaming because, as you may have noticed, it's actually RED!!!

did i mention that i LOVE it . . . because i totally do! (i was in the sun here by the way hence the ridiculously pale skin, i'm not usually that pale!)

i haven't tried the 'Rockette Red' yet but i'm pretty sure we can guarantee the fact that it will actually be red when i wear it!

seriously, to all my lovely 50's, vintage and rockabilly loving readers out there, if you've ever struggled to find a great shade of red lipstick, get yourself one of these!!!

not only is the colour fab but they're so creamy to apply and i've been wearing a coat of 'Roulette Red' for over an hour and a half now and my lips still feel all moisturized (the Rockalily lipsticks are enriched with Vitamin E so they won't dry out like most other lipsticks)

also, the pigment is so rich that you don't even need lipliner with them, this one still hasn't feathered and normally any other of my red lipsticks would have feathered and dried out all over the place by now

i fully LOVE my new lipsticks!!!

oh my golly gosh i can't go on enough about how fabulous they are!

if you're a regular red lippy wearer, i'd recommend you buy yourself a tube (or two. . . or twenty!)

but they're only available as a limited run at the moment, more are on the way but if you want yours now then act fast!

i ordered mine yesterday morning and they arrived today, perfection in postage form (as far as i'm concerned it is anyway! living on an Island i normally have to wait days/weeks for things to arrive!)

get yours here - Rockalily

and massive thanks to the fabulous ReeRee for launching this brilliant Cosmetics brand in the first place (and for being so awesome) i can't wait to see what she launches next!

head over to the official Rockalily site for more info or follow @RockalilyLondon

nothing else to report today, i'm heading out tomorrow to search for a Birthday present for my mum

might just have to try out the other Rockalily lipsticks as well!

that's all folks . . .
