So long 2011... ★

well, it's been a funny old year hasn't it! Some ups, some downs and as my blog will tell you, lots of colour!

I figured that a little look back over the year was in order, i don't normally fuss too much with New Years stuff but this year i'll be home alone, cooped up watching TV all night so i thought, might be fun to have a look back at it all!

2011 has been kind of a busy year for me, i've been working as a freelance illustrator and designer for just about 3 years now but 2011 has been my busiest year ever commission wise!

i've also altered my work style a little bit this year. this time last year i could barely scan an image to edit digitally and now almost everything i do is digitally edited/coloured/finished whether it's based on a scanned drawing or is drawn directly into photoshop or illustrator.

i'm still in college, which is evident from a lot of my posts, shots of my messy college desk and board frequently pop up over the year, but running the blog as a student helps me tick off units for my course as well as being able to share some of the more mundane parts of my day with you all!

i've always been a fan of all things cute, girly and kawaii, but in 2011 my work went to whole new levels of sweetness (i think it has anyway!) and everywhere you look on my blog there are sweets, cupcakes, princesses and lots of pinks, blues and reds!

other than college, it's been a quiet year for me! from time to time i do like to post about my family and friends but although this has always been first and foremost a personal blog, i try to keep family posts to a minimum, however i hope the ones i have posted haven't been too tedious for you all!

it's been a fab year networking wise as well and i'm fortunate enough to have made many creative new friends via Twitter (mostly!) as well as lots of new clients and contacts. oh and thanks for the kind words, emails, tweets and comments from all of YOU over the year as well!

time for a list! i love lists and to try and cheer myself up i thought a sort of '2011 achievements' list might be a good idea!

so, this year I have...
  • gotten some of my pieces and merch stocked in a local shop here on the Isle of Man
  • been included in an exhibition at the Isle Gallery at Tynwald Mills, with my artwork hung up the rest of my HND class from college as well as alongside some of the islands best artists, sculptors and photographers.
  • completely re-designed my website (along with the help of a local web designer) and set up an Etsy shop to sell my handmade stuff + merch
  • designed a winning t-shirt design for 'All Tropical'
  • set up POD shops on RedBubble, Artflakes and Society 6 and sold lots of stickers, prints and t-shirts + nearly 60 iPhone cases! i don't who's been buying them but thanks all the same!
  • designed quite a few logos, flyer, poster, banner and advert designs for various clients both local and international
  • built up my paid commissions portfolio (and subsequently spent most of my commission fees on business cards, postcards, prints and merchandise... i may be addicted!)
  • learnt a lot more about 'professional practice' + how to gain new clients and network with artists, galleries, collectives and shops.

so what are my plans for 2012 I hear you cry?

Well next year I intend to...
  • finish my HND and get a move on with my last year of the BA at college so i can finally achieve my degree in Fine Art
  • produce more' fine art' so that i actually live up to my course guidelines!
  • finalise the characters and story for a little children's picture book or maybe even FINALLY finish the pages for 'Where's Charlie?'
  • get more merchandise items featuring my work produced to sell in my online shop, in local shops + at local craft fairs
  • learn to use my bamboo tablet and further develop my digital illustration skills and techniques using photoshop and illustrator
  • learn to drive!

and i think that's about it! if there's anything else... i've forgotten it so oh well!

thank you for visiting the blog, whether you stop by to read about my artwork, my boring life or even if you just check in to see the pictures i post, i'm glad that you visit at all so THANK YOU!!!

all i have to do now is wish all of YOU + all of my friends and family a very HAPPY NEW YEAR

may 2012 bring you everything you wish for!

so until next year, i guess that's all folks... ◕‿◕ ★ xX

★ Jade's Wish List - 2011 ★

It's getting to be that time of year again, the time when you can't leave the house without a scarf, hat and gloves, when winter boots and multiple pairs of socks are the only thing that will keep your toes warm, the time when shops begin to fill with fancy gifts and sparkly lights and festive tunes start to fill the air, in my opinion it's THE best time of year, i'm talking, of course about the Wintery weather and the thought of Christmas, just around the corner!

Winter has always been my favourite season and when people ask me why i'm never really able to give them much of a proper reason!

There's just something about it that I love. I look forward to it in fact + the chance to wear winter coats, boots, gloves and hats, and getting to mooch around town shopping for fabulous presents for my friends and family.

Pretty wrapping paper, ribbons and tags, boxes stacked up waiting to be opened, it's all so much fun + it's amazing waking up and opening the curtains to see fresh snow covering everything like a layer of pristine icing, glittering ever so slightly.

I love the darker nights and the cold weather when all you want to do is curl up in a big blanket and sip sweet tea while reading a really good book or watching old Xmas movies. It's all heaven to me!

right i've rambled on for long enough I think, maybe...

anyway, since Christmas is coming I thought now might be the time to draw up a little Xmas Wish List just in case Father Christmas is reading this! I mean, i'm sure he reads my blog anyway... right?!

So here it is, my Dream Wish List for 2011 + reasons as to why i want/need each item

and yes, I am serious and no, I don't expect to wake up on Christmas morning to find all of these goodies waiting underneath the tree but hey, a girl can dream...

Jade's Dream Christmas Wish List 2011 - the TOP 10 (aka 'things Santa will never bring her, not in a million years no matter how nice and well behaved she is')

1. my name spelt out in these very cute tote shoppers from the fabulous Alphabet Bags (because, well look at them... do i really need to give a proper reason! they're brilliant)

2. a red papercut of '
I Miss Being a Small Girl' by the very awesome Rob Ryan (because i am a HUGE fan of his work and this is probably my favourite piece he's ever done!)

3. a gorgeous little Origami Crane necklace from Botica (because i like to fold paper cranes when i'm thinking and this necklace is just too lovely)

4. a 'Miss Lanvin' doll figurine from Lanvin (because i am a sucker for anything 'Lanvin' and i just adore these fabulous little Lanvin dolls!)

5. the full set of 'Clothbound Classics' Hardback Books from Penguin Books (because they are all so darn beautiful i can't pick just one + imagine how great it would be to have them all to pick from and read whenever/wherever!)

6. a 'lipstick red' Lips clutch bag by
Lulu Guinness (because i LOVE to wear red lipstick and this bag would always match my lipstick to perfection!)

7. a Guccioli 'Oliver' Pug keyring from Gucci (because i think it would look perfect on my black Gucci Indy bag + I just luuuurve Pugs!)

8. a truly brilliant Pashley 'Britannia' bicycle (in red of course!) from Adeline Adeline (because i sold my bike a few years ago and i really miss it! and because i've always wanted a bike JUST like this one)

9. a super duper pretty 'Floating Flock' dress from BHLDN (because let's face it, that is one cute dress!)

10. a pair of truly divine 'Big Stack' pumps with 120mm/5” high heels by Christian Louboutin (aka the God of shoes) i want these because... well other than the fact that they are AMAZING, they would totally match that BHLDN dress AND the Lulu Guinness lips clutch would match the red of the soles... perfect outfit sorted!!!

and there you have it, top 10 wish list for Xmas 2011... DONE!

a dream list of items that i will probably never own... or at least, will never get for Xmas, amassing a collective price tag of just under £3,150

i think i did rather well with it actually, i could have gone a bit more down the hedonism route but i tried to keep it quite reasonable and realistic, what do you think? will Santa finally pull through this year and leave all of this under my tree?!

probably not...

but it was fun nonetheless!

Either way I urge you ALL to have a go at one of these dream wish list type things, they are ridiculously fun to draw up even if I did get a bit carried away with mine, it seems to get a little more decadent as the list goes on but oh well!

like i said, i could have gone a bit crazier with it, i mean i could have asked Santa for a yacht, an Aston Martin V12 Vantage, an apartment in Monaco and a shopping spree around Harrods... but i didn't because i'm sensible... obviously

anyway that's all for now, i'm off to post my list to Santa just to make double sure that he gets it in time for Christmas! i'd hate for him to miss it and send me something else, after all, we wouldn't want that to happen would we...

i've got a new Creative Café post to pop up tomorrow evening so be sure to look out for that faithful readers!

so until next time, that's all folks... ◕‿◕ ★ xX

★ Exhibition Times ★

so i'm really sorry that i haven't posted anything this week, if you follow me on Facebook or Twitter then you'll know that i've been v busy getting everything sorted for the college end of year exhibition

well it opened last night for the Private View and i'm glad to report that it was another super duper success for the college

this year has served up another amazing array of displays from the Art Block students, ranging from stunning fashion pieces, clever media and design, beautiful illustration as well as some gorgeous fashion photography

oh yeah, and my work was on display too . . .

and of course, none of you have seen the little paintings yet have you! well i managed to keep it quiet but basically i had a go at re-creating 4 of my polka dot candy squares only i used acrylic, permanent marker and teeny tiny sticky dots instead!

anyway, on with the actual display! everyone gets an average of 2 display boards each but most use up 3 or 4 or wall space if it's available

now as well all know i wasn't even planning on doing an exhibition but when i went into college on Tuesday morning my tutor Billee informed me that actually. . . i was!

Tuesday was a bit hectic gathering everything together + printing/foam boarding stuff but my whole exhibition was sorted and displayed by Wednesday afternoon, albeit only on 2 boards

it was actually loads of fun to put up! as you can see i utilized most of the handmade stuff i've made recently + some of my most recent work (and a few older bits) but i think the point was that it was all very 'me'

i finished it completely the next morning by 11am and that was that.

the show opened last night and is open for the next 2 weeks from 10am - 8pm in the IOM College art block, so if you live local and get a spare hour, head on up and have a nice look round all the displays.

in case you can't make it, or don't live on the island, i took the liberty of snapping a load of photos of some of my personal fave displays when i popped into college this afternoon while it was nice and quiet.

 enjoy . . .

but as if all that smashingly awesome work wasn't enough, Chelsea, the girl in the boards next to me did an amazing Pinup shoot, a gorgeous video + made a set of stunning retro inspired lingerie, an epic Pinup Calendar + a darling little apron

her photos and pieces were sublime but my crappy camera doesn't do them justice! what are the odds that my work would end up next to a pinup shoot though! we have this super duper girly little corner now it's fab!

i also want to show you my friend Quinn's adorable picture book illustrations, last year i did an almost identical project for my FMP so i definitely wanted to share her work with you all since it's so amazingly cute!

so sweet right! her characters are darling, i especially love 'Alo' and the Alo plush is sooooo cute! the font as well is great, i suggested this font to her since it's the font i've used for my new website and i'm so pleased that she chose to use it for her work!

there really REALLY is some amazing work on display this year, i definitely recommend a visit to the college if you can make it, fantastic stuff, i'm proud to be a part of it all!

until then, that's all folks . . . ★ ◕‿◕ xX
